Uhuru Movement demands black community control of the police

On Aug. 9, the Uhuru Movement hosted a march in commemoration of Mike Brown, starting at the Uhuru House in St. Petersburg, Florida and ending at the steps of the city’s police department. The Uhuru Movement is a political organization working towards African freedom both in Africa and abroad. They want to regain control of their communities and stop police oppression towards African Americans.

The march was also a tool to promote the message for Black Power, Black Lives Matter as well as to demand for black community control of the police. They also hope to create their own black police force for the black community in St. Petersburg.

April Lanuza reported from the march in St. Petersburg, Florida.
